Shakespeare at Gavilan College!

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM . . .
A favorite of many performers and scholars of Shakespeare’s works and a treasure trove of famous quotes such as “The course of love never did run smooth” and “Lord what fools these mortals be.
Presented by “THEATRE 13” at Gavilan College!
I am very proud of my students from Theatre 13 – our performance class – they have all made great strides this year in their acting and performance skills. For many, this is their first Shakespeare production; for some in our ensemble it is their very first show.– John Lawton Haehl, Ph.D/ Director, Theatre Arts
With beautiful and magical settings inspired by the illustration of Arthur Rackham and created by visiting artist, Corey Strauss, the three “worlds” of Midsummer are set in distinctly different periods – from “Victorian” Athens to Goth & Punk-enchanted Oberon & Titania, to an “earlier, simpler” period of Rustics, guest directed by C. William Klipstine, faculty for Theatre 14 (Stage Production), whose students helped build the set.
FRIDAYS, April 25, May 2, May 9 @ 8:00 PM
SATURDAYS, April 26, May 3, May 10 @ 8:00 PM

Kids, arts, sports, academics . . . who, what and how we become

Were you the first kid the team captain eagerly tagged for a summer sandlot game? Were you the beaming child whose Friday art project always got picked for display at open house? Were you the one the teacher chose repeatedly for leads in the school musicals? Or were you left, hanging back, looking a bit sheepish and wishing the floor would open up and swallow you as your classmates got picked left and right, as you prayed for placement at that new school (the one with the advanced math classes and a great science fair)? Are crispy nights playing or cheering on your alma mater’s football field among your most significant memories? Does the sight of a stage curtain rising send your pulse racing and spirits soaring, and why? What memories come back to you around your arts, sports and academic involvement as a kid? How have those experiences molded you, your perception of the world, and your attitudes about these fields? How does it affect your kids and their interests and development?

JEWEL THEATRE COMPANY presents . . .

“COLORADO CATECHISM” by Vincent J. Cardinal
A “serious comedy” about life, love and the pursuit of sobriety, featuring Equity actors LANCE LASHELLE and JULIE JAMES
Opens FRIDAY, APRIL 11 and runs through APRIL 27!!
(8:00 PM on FRI and SAT/2:00 PM on SUN)
Broadway Playhouse (Art League Bldg)
526 Broadway (near Ocean St.), Santa Cruz

Two patchwork people – Ty, a successful painter, and Donna, a high school teacher – meet at a rehab clinic in Colorado. The rich, jaded Ty is not sure what to think when he first comes across the seductive but seemingly combative Donna whose sharp wit cuts to the quick. The crisp dialogue highlights both the humor and pathos of these two lost souls as they unwittingly hold a mirror up for each other. Less about drinking and more about the human condition and how deeply we touch the people we meet, COLORADO CATECHISM shines a light on our questions, secrets and games.

Here’s what critics have said about COLORADO CATECHISM:
“A slow dance filled with acerbic wit, playfulness, appreciation and love.” –Outlook.
“The play has truth . . . never becomes maudlin and has honest affection.” –L.A. Times.
“Though serious in its subject matter the play is full of laughs. Cardinal’s dialogue is sharp and witty.” –Daily Bruin, UCLA.

Courting the Muse

A Workshop in Creative Intimacy (IONS Campus-Petaluma, CA)

May 30-June 1, 2008
Presented by Luisha Teish and Uzuri Amini
Teish/Amini
Luisah Teish is a writer, teacher, performer and ritual priestess. Teish is also the director of the Full Faze Passage Council, a multi-racial, multi-cultural network of artists, consultants, and spiritual advisors experienced in events design and production.

Uzuri Amini is an initiated priestess of Oshun. She is also an intuitive spiritual life coach, ceremonialist, creative artist, and word warrior. She is also a faculty member of the School of Ancient Mysteries/Sacred Arts Center in Oakland, California.

The impulse to create is natural to all living beings. Within the stone is a jewel. Within the seed there is a flower. Within the spirit of the human the ability to create sacred art lies dormant awaiting a courtship by the Muse. In this weekend workshop participants will find their sources of inspiration through dream work, visualization, breath-work and movement. We will enter into an intimate relationship with the Muse and express ourselves through writing, painting, story telling and ritual.
